Be Careful – Do Not Lose It!

By Don Loftis | 01.19.11

I am not a fan of the Golden Globe Awards, and I did not see any of the telecast last Sunday night. In fact, I had never even heard of Christina Hendricks; but a story about her certainly caught my attention this morning.

At the Awards program, she was wearing a 124 carat diamond bracelet on loan from a local jeweler. Somehow, Christina managed to lose this bracelet, which was valued at $850,000. After several minutes of near panic, it was located and returned to a safer place for keeping. This story struck two nerves in my thinking.

First, I was reminded how easily we can lose very important things. A good reputation can be lost because of one immoral or unethical decision that we make. One affair can cost us a marriage partner of 25 years. Neglect, not physical abuse, can damage parent-child relationships in irreparable ways. Maybe most importantly, while gaining the world, we can lose our own immortal souls.

Secondly, I could identify with the spiral of emotions Christina must have experienced. The fear, sorrow, and panic of loss was replaced with the relieved joy of rediscovery. Sinful choices bring pain into our lives and our relationships. We experience moments of panic as we fear the spiritual death that sin causes. However, God’s love was demonstrated through Christ so that we may celebrate forgiveness, reconciliation, and reclamation. As the song says, “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now I’m found; was blind but now I see.”
