Graduation Milestones

By Don Loftis | 05.11.11

It is that time of year again, when it seems like everyone is graduating from somewhere. We don caps and gowns and distribute diplomas from preschool, kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, high school, college, and graduate school. Some view all of this as overkill, though the frequent participants enjoy the parties, gifts, and recognition.

Milestones, such as graduations, mark our journeys toward maturity. They provide points of reflection and remembrance. We do seem to work harder when there is an attainable goal that is at hand.

Are we aware that there are spiritual milestones in our lives as well? Baptism marks our birth into Christ and serves as a permanent monument. We can celebrate such events as the first time we read the whole Bible through, the first time we taught a Bible class, our first mission trip, or the first person we brought to Christ. Some of these events may be very private, but they are none the less significant events or stages in our spiritual development.

What is your next step in Christian maturity? What is your next spiritual celebration? Are you ready to teach? Are you ready to volunteer for a new ministry? Are you ready to be a deacon or an elder? We expect children to continue their growth and workers to continue honing their skills, and I am glad we can celebrate their accomplishments. However, I don’t want us to expect less of ourselves in the spiritual arena. Let’s set some goals and celebrate some milestones there as well.
