Overcoming Apathy

By Don Loftis | 03.07.12

I once read of a man who was taking a poll of attitudes held by people in his community.  He asked a young fellow, “I understand that many feel that ignorance and apathy are serious problems in our town.  How do you feel?”  To the question, the young man responded, “I don’t know and I really don’t care.”

There may be a number of reasons, but many of our generation find little to be excited about when religious or faith issues are raised.  A Baylor University survey showed that 44% of the respondents spent no time seeking eternal wisdom and 19% thought it useless to search for meaning or purpose in life.  A Life Way study concluded that only half of the people give any thought to going to heaven.  Are we bored?  Do we find Christianity tedious?

Of all people, Christians should possess excitement and passion in their lives.  Jesus highlighted the greatest command, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind” (Luke 10:27).  Every fiber of our being and every relationship in our lives has been reframed and energized by the sacrifice of Jesus.

Every day is a privilege to experience the immeasurable blessings of God.  Every person is an opportunity to bless a soul created in the image of God.  Even in the midst of adversity and uncertainty, Christians stand in an eternal hope that grows brighter and richer with each passing day.
