Back To Church Sunday

By Don Loftis | 08.22.12

Regular attendance and participation in worship is expected. God anticipates our presence to offer praise and adoration to Him.  Our brethren look forward to our presence as a means of edification and encouragement — an ongoing reminder that we are not in this race alone.  Elders, our spiritual leaders, seek our presence so that we may be spiritually fed.

Yet, sometimes we get into the bad habit of missing these services.  It seems that had occurred among some of the Hebrew Christians, so Heb. 10:24-25 admonished them, “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another– and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Those who stop attending likely still believe in God, continue to pray on occasion, and feel guilt over their priorities that have crowded out the Lord’s Church.  Most fully plan on someday coming back.  Yet, the habit of neglect and absence will continue until they choose to change.

I suppose that is the reasoning behind a movement that has designated September 16 as  “National Back to Church Sunday.”  Maybe you need that target date to repent and return.  Maybe it can be the week that you start attending a Bible Class.  Possibly it is an opening for you to invite someone who has “quit the church” to come back home to the One who is Lord of the church.  Remember, Jesus will be here on Sunday, will you?
