Don’t Forget The Victims

By Don Loftis | 08.01.12

It is nearing two weeks since James Holmes entered an Aurora, Colorado theatre and began shooting people who were inside.  Altogether 14 were killed, including a 6-year-old and an unborn child.  Additionally, 58 were injured in this worst mass shooting in American history.  As the stories of the victims have been told, we feel such sadness and compassion while reflecting on these tragic losses.  Though painful, it is right that their lives are remembered.

However, Steve Higgenbotham highlights another message that we may well miss.  If leaving the Aurora theatre parking lot you turn north, in exactly 2.2 miles you will reach the Mayfair Women’s Center.  It is there that every business day approximately 15 babies are killed by abortion.

In both of these locations innocent lives are taken, families hurt, and futures changed.  Yet, one is called a tragedy resulting in vocal outrage; the other is simply “business as usual.”  Glazed by abortion’s frequency and deluded by its legality, we fail to hurt, or speak out, or even to notice.

The church is called to be God’s messenger in our 21st Century world.  As Peter wrote in I Peter 4:11, “Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God.”  I believe we have a message of comfort for these who are devastated and a message of conviction for those who would harm innocent folk.  In both settings, we must never forget the victims!
