Time For Spring Cleaning

By Don Loftis | 04.24.13

As the days grow warmer and the daylight hours become longer, we recognize that it is time for spring cleaning.  It is time to clean up the clutter and discard some items that have accumulated through the winter.  It is time to organize closets, landscape the driveway, clean the gutters, and scrub the floors.

As spring arrives, it may also be time to do some spiritual cleaning in our lives as well.  Maybe through the winter we have fallen into some bad habits by neglecting prayer and Bible study.  Maybe we have missed more worship services than normal or gotten out of the habit of ministering to others.

Paul challenged the Corinthians, “Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves!” (II Cor. 13:5).  Maybe in looking at our lives this spring we will discover an attitude of bitterness or ingratitude that needs to be addressed.  Perhaps we might discover that we have failed to forgive a friend or family member or failed to confess a sin so the Lord might forgive us. Has selfishness or pride taken up residence in our hearts during the cold months?

Spring cleaning takes time and a lot of energy, and the longer we put it off the bigger the task becomes.  However, when we are finished there is a great feeling of accomplishment.   Spring cleaning on the spiritual level may be just as demanding and at times quite painful.  Yet, when it has been done well, it brings a great sense of blessing.  Let’s be sure this spring to clean out more than just the hall closet.
