Who Is #1 In Your Life?

By Don Loftis | 05.29.13

Austin Johnson is the youth minister for the church in Calvert City, KY.  Recently he wrote an article in their bulletin, The Encourager, in which he openly and exquisitely bragged on his wife.  He described Brianne as “his best friend and a gift from God.”

As I read the article I was pleased to see a young man (a preacher at that) who would openly praise and honor his wife.  Then I was stunned at the deep insight evident in his closing paragraph: “While Brianne is the most important person in my life, she is just a person.  I tell her this often: she is the second greatest gift that God has ever given me.  The greatest gift that God has ever given me is Jesus as my Savior.”

All of us can become attached to people — family members, favorite preachers, beloved mentors — but we must be careful to never take our eyes off of Jesus.  When loyalty to a person conflicts with loyalty to Jesus, we must be ready to choose the Lord.  Jesus warned in Luke 14:26, “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.”

People will come and go, live and die, bless and disappoint.  However, Jesus will remain the same yesterday, today and forever (Heb. 13:8).  That is why we are told to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

By the way, who is #1 in your life today?
