What You Are Doing Matters

By Don Loftis | 06.26.13

In Exodus 17, we encounter Israel’s first conflict following their deliverance from Egypt.  The Amalekites engaged them in battle at a place called Rephidim.  Moses carried his rod to the top of the mountain and watched the battle.  As long as he held up the rod, Israel won the battle.  However, when he was tired and lowered his hands, Amalek prevailed.  The Bible says, “Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other.  Thus his hands were steady until the sun set.”

While the leading actor gets the headlines, the supporting cast determines the success of the show.  While the Lord gets the glory and a select few may get the recognition, we need to know that all of us are making a difference in the kingdom of God.  Big things are impossible without the little things that support them.

Jesus said, “And whoever in the name of a disciple gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water to drink, truly I say to you, he shall not lose his reward.” (Matthew 10:42).   The Lord notices the little contributions and efforts that we make.

Often we spend our time waiting for the opportunity to do something big, when maybe we need to simply “lift up the hands” of someone else.  Let me challenge all of us to find two little things each day that we can do to help someone else.  Maybe it is sharing an encouraging word or smile in a checkout lane or buying a meal for someone we meet.  Just remember this–what you are doing for the Lord is making a difference.
