A Child Is Born

By Don Loftis | 07.24.13

The news media has been busy this week reporting on the birth of the “royal baby” in London.  As most everyone is aware, William and Kate are the parents of a son who will be the successor to the royal British throne.  One day this still unnamed boy will be king, though he is three generations removed that the position.

All the talk reminded me of a truly royal birth that is recorded in Luke 2.  Jesus was the Son of God and wore the title Immanuel, which meant “God with us” (Mt. 1:23).  There was no golden easel or town crier, but Jesus’ birth was announced by an angelic chorus saying, “I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people, for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Lk. 2:10-11).

I don’t know what this new baby will become.  Will he ever wear the British crown?  If so, will he be a good leader?  However, the baby born in Bethlehem is “king of kings and lord of lords” even today—2000 years later.

World wide attention to Kate’s pregnancy and delivery has been amazing.  American news coverage and talk show commentary have been extensive.  I would only hope that we would pay that much attention to the only “royalty” that can save us from our sins and offer true happiness—Jesus Christ.
