When The Time Is Right

By Don Loftis | 07.31.13

As a child I remember that we had two persimmon trees out behind the barn.  I don’t consider myself an expert, but I do remember that it was important to pick the persimmons at the right time.  Picked too soon, the tannic acid in the persimmon would make it so sour that the one eating would have a nearly permanent pucker on his face.  However, if you waited too long, the sweet filling would dry out and it would not be edible at all.

God has always had a perfect sense of timing.  Galatians 4:4-5 says, “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.”  Jesus came not a generation too soon or a generation too late.

Becoming a Christian demands that we wait until we are old enough to have faith and committed enough to genuinely repent.  However, waiting too long to respond to the Gospel allows Satan to harden our hearts.  Regarding Christian ministry, Paul warned not to appoint folks to leadership roles too soon (I Timothy 5:22).  However, the writer of the book of Hebrews knew that some who ought to be teachers still were on the milk of the Word (Heb. 5:12).

Today is the right time for everyone to respond to the Lord’s invitation.  It is the perfect time to use our talents to advance His kingdom.  It is the perfect time to study, pray, worship, and evangelize.  Yesterday may have been sour, and tomorrow may be dry, but today is just the right time to serve the Lord to our fullest.
