Malachi was a prophet to the remnant of Israel who returned from exile to Jerusalem. As the people came home, they found themselves distracted by the urgency of rebuilding their own homes and businesses, letting matters of faith slide to the back burner. Can you ever hear their thoughts echoing in your own mind? “Of course God comes first, and church is the most important thing; I just have some other stuff I need to get done right now. I’ll focus on that later.”
God had some firm words to the Israelites who continually offered up to Him their sloppy seconds. “When you offer blind animals in sacrifice, is that not evil? And when you offer those that are lame or sick, is that not evil? Present that to your governor; will he accept you or show you favor? says the LORD of hosts. (1:8)”

At your family holiday gatherings, do you give your own family things you regard as broken or trash? Do you only show up for work when you feel like it? Do you let your child skip the majority of their sports practices and expect they’ll find favor with their coach?

God is our loving Father, our esteemed Teacher, our merciful Savior. To save us, he spared no expense. “If you showed any other important person in your life the same amount of respect you typically show to God, would they be satisfied?,” asks the Lord.
