Sacrifice Matters

By Don Loftis | 01.29.14

One day near the end of Jesus’ ministry, He was sitting with His disciples in the temple area.  He observed a number of people coming by to put their contributions in the proper receptacles.  The rich dropped in their donations as did a widow whom the Lord would make famous.

Her two mites were about as small of a contribution as could be made in that day.  Technically she gave 1/64 of a day’s wage.  In our culture, if she worked eight hours at McDonalds, that would mean she dropped in a dollar.

However, Jesus determined value differently than we do.  Luke records Him as saying, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all of them; for they all out of their surplus put into the offering; but she out of her poverty put in all that she had to live on.”  Jesus took note of more than the face value of the gift; He evaluated the sacrifice that it represented.

I doubt that Jesus’ is less observant of the sacrifices that folks make for the kingdom today.  I believe He notices when we disconnect cable to give to a special mission project.  I believe he is aware of the times we skip our favorite program (or miss a ballgame) in order to visit the sick or participate in an outreach project.  I think God knows when we honor Him despite our being tired, having the sniffles, or even having to miss a meal.

More than just noticing the sacrifices that we make, I believe He is pleased and honored by what, or more precisely, who we put first.
