The Best Way To Learn God’s Word

By Don Loftis | 01.22.14

We seldom make progress toward any goal until we establish a strategy.  This is true regarding weight loss, becoming debt-free, and improving Bible knowledge.

Noted psychologist William Glasser said that we learn 10% of what we read; 20% of what we hear; 30% of what we see; 50% of what we see and hear; 70% of what we discuss with others; 80% of what we experience personally; 95% of what we teach others.

While the percentages might vary from person to person, the order is going to be accurate for most folks.  This would allow us to draw some important conclusions in developing our strategy to master the truths of Scripture.

(1) Hearing the sermon in person is better than reading the transcript in private.

(2) Using PowerPoint slides in the sermons should double our retention.

(3) Class discussions on biblical topics would be a useful improvement over lectures.

(4) Application and implementation of biblical truths will reinforce the message.

(5) Accepting the challenge to teach a class or to lead a home study will prove to be the best way to maximize our learning.

As teachers, we want to share the truths of Scripture in the clearest and most memorable ways possible.  However, much of the key to learning lies in the heart and mind of the student.  What will you do to improve your biblical knowledge?  What is your strategy?
