Attention For A Greater Cause

By Don Loftis | 08.27.14

The ALS ice bucket challenge has became a national phenomenon.  Thousands of folks from all types of backgrounds have poured ice water on their heads and challenged others to do the same in order to bring awareness to this dreaded disease (also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease).  The challenge has been a lot of fun for friends and families (myself included), and it has also been very successful in raising over fifty million dollars for ALS research.

I wish there were something that raised public awareness for the disease of sin.  It is worse than ALS in two ways.  First, it affects us all, for “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” Everyone of us must grapple with the consequences of our own sins.  Secondly, the wages of sin go well beyond physical consequences, because sin condemns our souls. The years of suffering with ALS are terrible, but the pain of Hell is eternal.

While a cure for ALS remains a mystery, there is a cure for sin.  The blood of Jesus Christ is 100% effective in washing away sin, and this gospel message is truly good news that needs to be told.  Contributions are not for research but for education, so that God’s grace can be shared with the billions of men and women who need to know of the cure of all cures.

It is interesting to observe the excitement that has come to social media, as people get cold water poured on their heads.  How much more exciting it should be to see a sinner buried in the water of baptism to be cured from sin and rescued from Hell.  Let’s support good charities, but let’s not forget to support the greater Cause.
