Follow The Light

By Don Loftis | 01.07.15

On January 2, the Gutzler family was flying home from a Florida holiday stay, when engine problems caused the small Piper aircraft to crash in rural western Kentucky.  Both parents, their nine-year-old daughter and 14-year-old niece were killed on impact.  However, seven-year-old Sailor Gutzler survived.

After freeing herself from the wreckage she began walking for help. Wearing shorts and no shoes in the 38 degree weather, she walked three quarters of a mile through dense woods and very rugged terrain.  Finally she arrived at a house and told them the story.  When asked how she had managed to know which direction to go and how to find their house she replied, “I could see this light way off in the distance, so I just kept walking toward the light.”

I feel great sadness for her and her tragic loss, but I also stand amazed at her wisdom to walk toward the light.  I wonder if we can’t all learn a crucial lesson.  Jesus said in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”  No matter what difficulties we encounter on our life’s journey, keeping our eyes on Jesus will always lead us to safety.

As the new year begins, our lives may not be where we wish they were.  Maybe we are fearful or angry, or confused, or deeply discouraged. Minimizing our difficulties or the very real pain is no more helpful than Sailor denying her families’ death.  The key to really living in 2015 will be to look for the light and follow the light to safety.
