Accidentally Obsessed With Appearances

By secretary | 04.08.15

America’s Next Top Model, Project Runway, The Biggest Loser. These are just three of all the TV shows that place a major emphasis on appearance. It is evident by what we call entertainment, and our familiarity with words like ‘fit, trend, fad,’ that the world we live in is obsessed with appearances.

Most people reading this would likely say, “no” they are not obsessed with appearances. Obsessed is a strong word. That would mean we were utterly consumed with our or other’s appearance. It is very easy to get caught up in outward appearance without even realizing it.

In 1 Samuel even God’s prophet Samuel gets caught up in looks and appearances. He wants to anoint the tallest, handsomest, son of Jesse, King. God says to Samuel, “Do not consider his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Samuel was God’s chosen prophet and yet he fell into an accidental obsession with the looks of these potential kings. This is an area of life where we must check our hearts motives often. Do we care too much about what we are wearing or what others think of us in public? Are we quick to judge others by what they do or not have? It is easy to do, because that type of behavior surrounds us. I challenge you to consider what the Lord looks at. Consider the heart of God’s children.
