Happy Birthday America

By Don Loftis | 07.06.16

We just celebrated the 240th birthday of our nation.  The Declaration that proclaimed our independence from Great Britain in 1776 placed a great deal of weight on divine support.  The opening paragraph made an appeal to “Nature’s God.”  It stated a belief that all men were “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights”.  It closed with this affirmation: “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the Protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”

Despite that religious heritage, I must say, I found it ironic yesterday to hear folks singing “God Bless America.”  Our nation has chased God out of the public marketplace into church buildings and desires to tell Him how His business is to be run even there.  Evolution has replaced creation as an explanation of our origin.  Morality has been redefined, and the ultimate transgression is to refer to something as sin.

Yet, for all of the things that are amiss in our land, where else would I want to live?  What other flag would I want to pledge my allegiance to?

Given this contradiction of feelings, what should we do.  First, we need to speak out for right–kindly but firmly.  Secondly, we need to live out the precepts of God’s Word.  We must show a better way to live.  Finally, we must pray to God for His forgiveness, patience and leadership.  And as a part of that prayer, don’t forget to thank Him for America and for those who have sacrificed so much to keep her free.
