The Word That Never Changes

By Don Loftis | 09.07.16

A friend stopped to visit a wise but not very successful violin teacher one day.  He asked the old man, “Well, what’s the good news today?”  The music instructor walked across his apartment, picked up a small mallet and struck a tuning fork that hung down from his ceiling.  He then said, “There is good news today.  That note was A.  It was A yesterday, and it will be A in a thousand years.  No amount of off key voices or out of tune instruments will ever change it.”

The Bible is that type of a constant for us, providing truths for every generation.  Keith Getty and Stuart Townend composed a beautiful hymn a decade ago entitled “Speak O Lord.”  One phrase describing the timeless nature of Scripture says, “Truths unchanged from the dawn of time that will echo down through eternity.”

We live in the midst of a world characterized by change and chaos.  Technological advances coupled with seismic changes in human values have altered the landscape of our culture.  Yet, the nature and needs of people have not changed that much.  The basic questions that are asked remain the same, and God’s answers are equally predictable.  The Scriptures were Truth when they were written; they were truth during the Sixties; they are truth today.

In fact we possess the only message that will transcend time.  Jesus said, “He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day” (John 12:48).  The good news today is that there will be no Scripture reading on the Day of Judgment that we have not already received.  Let’s be sure our heart and lives are shaped by that message.
