Who’s Your Lawyer?

By Don Loftis | 01.11.17

If you watch much television, you will notice the many ads for legal services.  Have you been injured in an accident?  Has your medical device proven defective?  Have you been denied social security benefits?  Are you facing a foreclosure or bankruptcy?  Is a divorce on the horizon?  Willing and capable lawyers are standing by to help us through these crises.

In John’s first epistle he announces that Jesus is the head of our spiritual legal team.  “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.  And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the entire world” (I John 2:1-2).  This makes two things very clear.

As Christians, we still sin, and Jesus serves as our advocate before God.  That term parallels our concept of a “defense attorney.”   In Romans 8 Paul described the risen Christ as our intercessor.  Jesus pleads our case before God, not on the basis of our innocence, but on the basis of our relationship.  We are acceptable to the Father, because we belong to His son.

In a legal sense, Jesus is also our “propitiation”.  This is the price paid to satisfy God’s anger in regards to our moral debt (sin).  His sinless life offered on Calvary has the power to set us free from the chains of sin and the dungeon of punishment.  Jesus is the only one capable of offering this level of forgiveness and hope.  When you are choosing your legal team, don’t forget the most important member.  Please don’t go anywhere without Jesus.
