Well Done!!

By Don Loftis | 02.08.17

Preachers who share God’s message hold a respected place in Scripture.  The prophets were honored for their faithful proclamation.  Paul challenged the Roman Christians with these words, “And how will they hear without a preacher?  How will they preach unless they are sent?  Just as it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good tidings.’”  Many years ago someone commented, “God only had one son, and He was a preacher.”  This past week two great proclaimers of the Gospel passed away.

We came to be associated with Cy Stafford several years ago in our support of a mission effort in Tanzania.  For 25 years he taught the Gospel and oversaw an expanding mission program in East Africa.  Today there are three Bible training schools and over 500 congregations due to those efforts.  Every newsletter highlighted God’s work in Tanzania and the folks who are continuing those efforts.  His deteriorating health usually received three lines in  the last paragraph.

A.T. Pate passed away after preaching for 68 years.  Most recently he was the pulpit minister for the Central congregation in Nashville.  He spoke daily on the radio (WNAH) as a part of the longest running broadcast of churches of Christ in  the country.  He was preaching at the Green Street congregation when Pam and I first started dating.  His passion for the story of Jesus and his effervescent smile were factors that encouraged me to preach.

As they went through their final weeks, both battling cancer, I know they were encouraged by their faith which promised a crown of righteousness, made possible by the love of God and the blood of Christ.  All I can add is a hearty “thank you” for their powerful examples to me.
