The Only Book That Matters

By Don Loftis | 03.08.17

I recently heard a law firm advertisement that touted one of its attorneys being listed in “Super Attorneys of America.”  Who’s Who books have been around for a long time highlighting students and professionals alike.  These publications tend to fall into one of two categories.  Some editorial boards evaluate a variety of candidates and choose for inclusion those who are at the top of their field.  Others are self-submissions, where people complete questionnaires and are listed in the next edition.

Through my years of preaching, I have been invited to have my name included in several books.  Of course I was invited to buy copies of the book for me and my family at a very hefty price.  I declined more out of being “cheap” than being humble.

In reality, there is only one book in which our names need to be printed.  Paul had referenced that book in Philippians 4:3.  John wrote in Revelation 20, “And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. … And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”

This is not a book to brag about our accomplishments or personal worth.  Identification on its pages acknowledges forgiveness and adoption that is graciously ours through Jesus Christ.  It is available to all, but accepted by few.  Is your name written there?
