Have You Heard The Warning?

By Don Loftis | 05.24.17

Recently a young girl sitting on a rock wall at a Canadian harbor was pulled into the water by an agitated sea lion.  Though neither the girl nor the man who jumped in to rescue her were injured, the harbor officials were quick to point out that the family had ignored the posted warning to not feed the sea lions.  Experts think the sea lion associated the girl’s dress hanging over the edge of the wall with food.

We are inundated every day with warnings.  Medically, we are warned of the dangers of obesity and inactivity.  Tobacco products carry warning labels, and every drug (no matter its track record) has to list all of its potential side effects.  Safety experts warn of dangers associated with cell phones, unused seat belts, venetian blind cords and food preservatives.  Most of our phones have weather apps that warn of impending storms or tornadoes.

The Bible issues some warnings as well.  God warned Noah about an impending flood (Hebrews 11:7).  Jesus said, “But I will warn you whom to fear: fear the One who, after He has killed, has authority to cast in to hell; yes, I tell you to fear Him” (Luke 12:5).  Jesus is also quoted in Revelation 21:8, where His bold warning says, “But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

Our inclination is to ignore warnings, thinking that they are overstated, or that we will be the exception.  Failing to wear a seat belt may get you a ticket; not exercising may take five years off your life; ignoring God’s warning will cost you your soul!
