Decisions, Decisions

By Don Loftis | 06.28.17

We experience some important events in our lives, that at the time we do not fully appreciate.  My wedding day,  43 1/2 years ago, was a great event.  I looked forward to it and helped plan some of the details.  However, at 21 I did not fully understand marriage — its joys or its challenges.  I did not understand how fully it was going to change my life.  There was no way to understand that my love for Pam was going to multiply through the years.   Watching Sunday’s baptisms (three in person and one on video) reminded me of another important day in my life — my baptism into Christ on April 28, 1964.  I doubt I knew much about redemption, justification, or sanctification.  What I did know was that my sins were gone, [...]

What Does It Cost?

By Don Loftis | 06.21.17

We have all seen the show.  The realtor takes the young couple on the tour of a house that might become their first home.  He points out the quiet neighborhood, the shaded yard, a spa in the back yard, and a two car garage. Inside, there are four bedrooms, three baths, granite counter tops, upscale appliances, and a fireplace.  After all the smiles and “ah’s” fade, the inevitable question is, “How much does it cost?”   Many folks listen to the list of blessings that come from Christ and ask, “What’s the catch?  What does it cost?”  The simple answer is all that is required is faith in Christ as Savior.  However that is not a cheap faith satisfied in a public confession or private acceptance of Jesus into one’s heart.   Faith is the [...]

I Am Amazed

By Don Loftis | 06.14.17

The early chapters of Genesis tell of the remarkable flood that God sent to destroy life on the planet.  It is one of the most familiar stories in the Bible, but there are some amazing things that are often overlooked.   First, I am amazed at how quickly evil had captured the hearts of mankind.  In ten generations spanning about 1500 years, Genesis 6:5 can vividly proclaim, “Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”  Of all the people living, only 8 were characterized as righteous.   Secondly, I am amazed at how the Creator felt.  The totality of the world’s destruction leads us to stress the anger of the Lord.  However, there was more [...]

Answering God’s Call

By Don Loftis | 06.07.17

Recently I read that in 2016 Americans received over 29 billion unsolicited phone calls.  That works out to about 100 per person.  We have all received these — usually at mealtime, naptime, or travel time.  The result is that we ignore calls whose number we do not recognize and hope the computer’s spam folder captures all of those unwanted e-mails as well.   At a different level, many folks are ignoring calls that come from God, because they don’t recognize the source.  They fail to read or apply the Scriptures.  They miss God’s message of spiritual importance delivered in times of national tragedy, personal illness, attendant deaths and births.  These spiritually unobservant folks ignore the invitations and warnings offered by their closest friends.   Yet, the call to respond to the Lord’s invitation is the [...]
