Answering God’s Call

By Don Loftis | 06.07.17

Recently I read that in 2016 Americans received over 29 billion unsolicited phone calls.  That works out to about 100 per person.  We have all received these — usually at mealtime, naptime, or travel time.  The result is that we ignore calls whose number we do not recognize and hope the computer’s spam folder captures all of those unwanted e-mails as well.

At a different level, many folks are ignoring calls that come from God, because they don’t recognize the source.  They fail to read or apply the Scriptures.  They miss God’s message of spiritual importance delivered in times of national tragedy, personal illness, attendant deaths and births.  These spiritually unobservant folks ignore the invitations and warnings offered by their closest friends.

Yet, the call to respond to the Lord’s invitation is the most important call we will ever receive.  It is more important than a call announcing college acceptance, job promotion, contest win, grandchild’s arrival, or military victory.  We must never forget the words of Jesus who said, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

However, the call of the Lord is not limited to the Gospel invitation extended to non-Christians.  God calls His people to spiritual growth and deeper levels of holy living.  He calls us to lives of passionate service.  Isaiah heard the call of God in the simple question, “Who will go for me?”.  He answered, when he said, “Lord, here am I, send me.”  May we never be afraid to answer the call of the living God!
