What Does It Cost?

By Don Loftis | 06.21.17

We have all seen the show.  The realtor takes the young couple on the tour of a house that might become their first home.  He points out the quiet neighborhood, the shaded yard, a spa in the back yard, and a two car garage. Inside, there are four bedrooms, three baths, granite counter tops, upscale appliances, and a fireplace.  After all the smiles and “ah’s” fade, the inevitable question is, “How much does it cost?”

Many folks listen to the list of blessings that come from Christ and ask, “What’s the catch?  What does it cost?”  The simple answer is all that is required is faith in Christ as Savior.  However that is not a cheap faith satisfied in a public confession or private acceptance of Jesus into one’s heart.

Faith is the only requirement, but true faith is a renunciation of sin (Romans 6), a death to selfish behaviors (Galatians 2:20), and a willingness to carry one’s personal cross on a daily basis (Luke 9:23).  Love for God exceeds that for any other and encompasses heart, soul, mind and strength (Mark 12:30).  Christians are called to demonstrate their faith in the face of persecution (II Timothy 3:12) — mistreatment that may come from their own family (Lk. 12:49-53).

The couple may tell the realtor the price is beyond their budget and look for housing elsewhere.  However, to turn down Jesus’ offer of eternal life leaves no alternative.  Biblical faith may seem like a high price, but the reality is that it is the best bargain ever presented.  What are you doing with the offer?
