Single Parent Encouragement Day

What To Expect

We at the Old Hickory Church of Christ wanted to put together a day where anyone around our community who is a single parent could come and be encouraged and refreshed.  The entire program will take place on Saturday, November 5th, and will last from 8:30am to 1:00pm.  It will consist of a series of available class options, all of which are free, and all of which are optional.  Come to as few or as many as you would like. (See the schedule below.)

Breakfast will be served from 8:30am to 9:00am, and lunch will be served starting around noon.  Also, we will provide childcare for parents participating in the various sessions.  Everything we offer on this day will be free for participants.  We love our community, and want it to be a better and stronger community because our church family is here.  Pre-registration is not required, but is encouraged so that we can plan well for food and childcare.

Session Options

You can attend as few or as many sessions as you like.  Here are the options for what we’ll offer, along with the length of the sessions:

Internet Safety

Technology can be a great blessing, but with many of the online threats that exist today, it can also put your children at great risk.  Predators, bullying, and rampant filth have become far too common.  Detective Mike Adkins of the Metro Police Department is coming to do a couple of sessions to train parents in how to protect your children from risks that come from the internet.  Detective Adkins is part of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. (1.5 hours)

“Why Do They Act Like That?!” – Understanding Your Child’s Behavior

Dr. Crystal Whittington, child development expert, and professor of Family Consumer Sciences at Harding University, will provide a couple of different classes for parents, based on the ages of their children.  There will be a session for parents of very young children, and a separate session for parents of older children and teens.  These classes will help you better understand why your children do what they do, and therefore how you can best respond to them.  Each class will allow some time for questions and answers if you have any.  Dr. Whittington also plans to be available during lunch and at breaks for anything you’d like to visit about.  (1 hour)

Tools for Coping

The transition from being married to being single can be a source of great emotional stress.  Robert Stewart, M.A., a Youth and Family Counselor, will provide some informative sessions for how to best deal with sources of grief in your life.  This will also be a group setting where you will have the opportunity to share what is on your heart, to encourage, and to be encouraged.  Mr. Stewart will also be available during lunch and breaks for anyone needing to talk through any specific situations.  He is also available for personal counseling sessions by appointment. (30 mins)

CPR Training

CPR training might not be a normal thing to work into your schedule, but when the situation calls for it, it is an invaluable skill set to possess.  The program we are offering is the American Heart Association Friends & Family CPR Course, taught by Lara Fowler, BSN, RN.  Because students will learn by practicing on dummies, we must limit the number of participants to the number of dummies available.  So there will be up to 15 participants per session. (1.5 hours)

Financial Coaching

Many single parents struggle to make ends meet.  We will be providing some instruction, prepared especially for those in single parent situations, to help you make good decisions about budgeting, saving, taxes, and preparing for the future. (1 hour)

“I want to participate!”

Terrific!  We hope to have a large number of people participate.  Your pre-registration is not required, but is strongly encouraged so that we can accurately prepare for childcare, classes, and food.  We realize you may not be able to stay for the whole program, but would be glad to have you come at whatever point you are available, for whichever sessions would help you most.

We also plan to have a goody bag prepared for all participants with numerous coupons, books, and information that will be helpful to single parents.  There will also be door prizes for which we’ll have a drawing at lunch time.
