There are a lot of famous singers named Mary. There was Peter, Paul, and Mary in the 60s and Mary Chapin Carpenter in the 90s. However, when it comes to female singers named Mary, the most famous of all was Mary, the mother of Jesus, who sang a truly magnificent song while on a visit to see her cousin, Elizabeth. What do you shout to the rooftops or sing to the heavens when you contemplate what it means to become a parent? Instinctively, Mary’s soul magnified the Lord and her spirit rejoiced in God.
The thing that impressed Mary most was the way God looks out for humble people. She said He does great things for them; He fills their lives with good things. She reminded her listeners that recipients of these blessings are undeserving, but that God is merciful as well as mighty. He brings the proud low but exalts those who fear in Him. Thinking of all the ways He blessed her life, Mary chose these words to describe God: “Holy is His name.”
Names and reputations are inseparable. Just the mention of God’s name thrills the heart of those who know Him best. Being holy suggests many things, but to Mary, God is praiseworthy because He is a helper. He blesses the hungry, barren, sad, and forlorn. Best of all, He helps those who need a Savior. Have you thanked God lately for His goodness to you? The more you get to know Him, the more you will appreciate Mary’s song. Holy is His name!
