Capernaum played an important role in the life of Jesus. This city was the home of Andrew, Peter, James, and John and the basecamp of Jesus’ ministry. Jesus taught there on the Sabbath, and people were astonished by His authority. Jesus’ insight and conviction were unlike other teachers of the day.
As he was teaching, something startling occurred. A man in the synagogue suddenly cried out with a loud voice, “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are the Holy One of God.” Jesus rebuked the evil Spirit saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” People watched as the demon threw the man down and then left him. Those who previously were astonished at Jesus’ teaching were now amazed at his power. They said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” Reports of these happenings spread throughout the surrounding region.
Reports of the power of Jesus’ words continue to spread to this day. Those who put Jesus’ words into practice are still astonished by His wisdom and amazed by His power. Bodily possession no longer occurs, but the influence of Satan on people’s minds and lives is more than evident. The good news is that Jesus’ words still set people free from Satan’s harmful control. Startled by their impact, we wonder, “What is this word?” It is the gospel, the power of God unto salvation (Romans 1.16). The spiritual effects of Jesus’ words in the 21st century are even more impressive than their physical effects in the first century. They continue to astonish and amaze.
